Speed Limits

Speed Limits At 4front Driving School we encourage our students to be observant towards speed limit signs and look out for the change of speed which is more likely to be placed at the junction to a new road, but can also appear at points on a long carriageway too. National Speed Limit This sign indicates that the national speed limit applies, which is for cars 60mph on a single carriageway or 70mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the road is safe to do 60mph or 70mph all the times – there may be sharp bends and other challenging sections, especially on a single carriageway road. Therefore you as a driver have a responsibility to judge the safest speed to suit the road and the driving conditions.  To begin with when learning to drive we say to our learners to drive at a speed they feel comfortable with. Once you have built up your confidence you can aim towards achieving a safe speed to drive at. Remember it can also be dangerous driving to s...

One Way Systems

One Way Systems One-way systems can present a confusing challenge to not only learner drivers, but experienced drivers alike.  Therefore at 4front Driving School we encourage our students to familiarize themselves with the one way Systems around towns they learn in which in turn will help them to adapt their understanding of how they work with new systems they come across in the future. They can often involve multiple lanes. During a driving test, the examiner will either tell you which lane they would like you to take, or ask you to ‘follow the signs for’ – leaving it for you to decide which lane is appropriate. Look out for signs, road markings or follow the basic rule left hand lane for left and right hand lane for right. Left hand lane for straight on unless lane markings say otherwise or there are more than 2 lanes. Many driving tests are failed on one-way systems due to learner drivers using the incorrect lane, realising they are in the incorrect lane and accessing the correc...

Motorway Driving

Motorway Driving Make sure your car is ready for a drive on the Motorway  High speeds and long distances can increase the chance of your car breaking down so you are recommended to carry out the following checks on your vehicle beforehand: Tyres : Make sure they’re in good condition and inflated to the correct pressure for motorway driving. This is indicated in the vehicle handbook or drivers door pannel. U se a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps. Check the tyre tyres depth and that there are no cuts and bulges. There should be 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre. Displaying any faults?:  Make sure there are no mechanical faults lit up on the dash display. Mirrors : Make sure your mirrors are visibily clean and correctly positioned. Windscreen and windows : Make ...

Reverse Bay Park

Reverse Bay Park You might have to reverse bay park on your driving test which would take place at your local test centre if they have a car park, if they don't have a car park then you will not be asked to complete this manoeuvre. There are several different methods of achieving  a reverse bay park, but at 4front Driving School  we want our students to find a technique that suits them. Most students will choose the 45 degree method as it will work in almost all situations. Here is the 4front Driving School guide to the 45 degree technique. Reversing into a bay has always been described as being the safer option than driving forward into one as you'll have a better view when driving forward out of it, especially if you have vehicles either side of you.  There's not much room for error when parking in between cars but in your driving test you'll probably  be able to do this with empty bays either side. Once you have passe your test you may also wan...

Single carriageway

Where a single carriageway has three lanes and the road markings or signs do not give priority to traffic in either direction use the middle lane only for overtaking or turning right. Remember, you have no more right to use the middle lane than a driver coming from the opposite directiondo not use the right-hand lane. Where a single carriageway has four or more lanes, use only the lanes that signs or markings indicate. Driving In Fog

The RAC say 'Fog lights need to be used at the right times to combat reduced visibility, otherwise you could be a danger to yourself and other drivers. Using them at the right time should aid safe driving but using them at the wrong time could mean you are breaking the law and endangering other drivers. To help motorists stay as safe as possible we have put together a guide of useful information on how to drive in fog and when to use your fog lights.' You should familiarize yourself with the foglight controls and learn how to turn them on and off correctly. You will need your dipped headlights on before you can turn on your front or rear fog lights. Not all cars have front fog lights,  it depends on the make, model and specifications of the car. The rear fog light is more important as its important for other drivers to see you. This concept follows suit if other drivers turn theirs on correctly too and therefore you can see them more easily.
