🚗 Learning to Drive in 2025? Here’s the Truth About the Test Backlog
If you're learning to drive this year, you're not alone in wondering “why is it still so hard to get a test?” Here's what's really going on 👇
📅 The backlog is still huge – During the pandemic, over 1.3 million tests were cancelled or delayed. Even though the DVSA is now doing more tests than before COVID (about 150,000 a month), at the current pace, it could still take:
➡️ Over 6 years to clear the backlog of people who still need to pass (not quite the covered up cracks that DVSA are predicting)
➡️ Or up to 11 years if you count every missed test spot
Yes they are employing more examiners, but unfortunately more are leaving the industry and at a rate that is too hard for them to keep up with.
But on the positive:
✅ Pass rates are improving – More than 50% of learners are now passing, up from around 45% pre-COVID. So if you’re fully prepared and working with a good instructor, your chances are better than ever.
📍 Test centre location matters – Rural centres (quieter areas) have seen higher pass rates, especially during lockdown, due to less traffic and fewer distractions. But no matter where you take it, good habits and calm driving are what really count. To pass your test - you should be able to drive anywhere to test standard. Its not just about knowing the area. But the stats on different locations is quite interesting.
