Learning to Drive: A Guide to Driving Shoes

Choosing the right pair of shoes to drive in can make or break a lesson, test or driving experience. You need to be able to feel the pedals, apply pressure with comfort, not get your feet caught and most importantly have shoes that allow you be and feel in control. There is of course a lot of other things to consider when learning to drive, but this blog focuses on the importance of choosing the correct shoes before you get behind the wheel and in turn avoiding any stress or difficulty caused by having the wrong pair.  It may sound cringey but making the correct decision is important, there are indeed many does and don’ts, which is why we have put together this handy learners guide to driving shoes.  Check your soles The sole of the shoe in question is vitally important when selecting the right pair for driving. You will want to make sure that the shoes’ sole is neither too thick nor too thin. When driving you want the right balance of feel on the pedals and protection for your feet, s

Driving in the Rain

Driving In the Rain  Use Your Windscreen Wipers and know how to use them for maximum affect. While this may seem like common sense, some people forget to clear their windscreens enough this reduceing their visibility. Mske sure you turn on your windscreen wipers in light rain. Most cars’ windscreen wipers speed is adjustable to clear moisture from the glass in a light mist or in a heavy downpour. Most modern cars even have automatic wiper settings that can sense when it is raining, how heavy the rain is and how fast they need to operate. Turn On Your Headlights By turning on your vehicle’s headlights it will increase both your own visibility and other drivers’ ability to see your car on the road. When it rains it tends to be darker outside and visibility is then reduced.  Maintain a Safe Distance Between You and Other Vehicles Keep a greater distance between your vehicle and the car in front of you. Stopping your vehicle may require twice the stopping distance when it rains

Driving in the Dark

At 4front Driving School we believe that it is important to get experience in a range of different driving conditions when you are learning to drive. Night time driving (driving in the dark) is one of them and we encourage learners to gain experience in these dark conditions. To drive safely in the dark you need to consider some important steps to make the experience less daunting so that you not only feel safer but become a safe driver in the dark. Make sure you keep your windscreen clean, clear and streak free. Do the same for all your other windows and don't forget your mirrors. This will help to avoid any increased glare and condensation build up. To reduce condensation build up in damp conditions try using the air conditioning, it won't make the car cold if the heat setting is correct but instead will circulate dry air around the interior of the car. Don’t dazzle other drivers - dip your lights when faced with another road users. If you need to use your full be

Eco Driving Techniques

Eco Driving Techniques with 4front Driving School. We pride our techniques that we have learnt and want to share that will help you save fuel and reduce the impact that you and your vehicle are having on the environment. To Drive More Smoothly, To drive more smoothly you should firstly assess the road as far ahead of ahead as possible to avoid unnecessary late braking. Over acceleration is the other problem which increases the amount of fuel you use so a smooth and gentle acceleration uses less power and thus requires less fuel to be consumed. Increasing Greater Distance   Try to maintain a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front so that you can adapt your speed when necessary by coming off of the accelerator and letting the car slow down naturaly without using the brakes. Lowering Gears Down Hill Lowering the gears to help control the speed down a hill uses engine braking braking. Engine braking shuts off fuel consumption, as opposed to just braking or putting the car in

Senario - Glare Of The Sun After Rain

Have you ever considered different senarios that you may face when you are out on the road. Here is a common one to consider. Senario - So we’ve just had a downpour of rain and the sun has started to come out which is rather low in the sky. What do you need to consider or be aware of? The glare off the sun on the road As the the sun reflects the water on the road it causes a glare that affects the drivers visibility and makes the road markings more difficult to see. How could you deal with this situation to make the driving condition easier to contend with? At 4front Driving School we encourage our students to, 1) Use your sunglasses, (and bring them with you to each lesson so that you are prepared) 2) Use the sun visor to reduce the glare, 3) Slow down if your visibility is reduced to give yourself more time to make decisions and direct the car more safely and efficiently. 4) Remember to still check your mirrors as you will still be able to see how accurately you are positioned

Roundabouts

4front Driving School Driving Lessons in & around Loughborough Roundabouts A  roundabout  (also known as a traffic island) is a road circle joining three or more roads. Drivers follow a simple rule to avoid accidents. In the UK where we drive on the left: At the island you must give way to traffic coming from your right as they have priority. The driver goes round the island in a clockwise direction. Roundabouts aren’t just tricky for learner drivers, many experienced drivers with years of driving under their belt can find these sections of road the hardest to manage. Thankfully, there are a number of rules to keep you and other drivers alike safe. The aim of the roundabout is to keep the traffic flowing, but this can only be achieved if everyone on the roundabout keeps to these rules. Among these are rules on how to signal on approach to and when coming off of a roundabout. You can read up more on roundabouts in the highway code. Priority You should give way to traffic from the ri

The Cockpit Drill

The cockpit drill  is a sequence of checks which you should carry out whenever you get into your vehicle, especially if someone else has previously driven the vehicle as you need to set it up for your own comfort, vision and safety.  There are a number of tasks to perform to achieve the cockpit drill. Check Your Doors Are All Closed Check that all the doors of the car are closed by: Checking both your wing mirrors to see if the doors are flush with the frame of the car. Pull your door handle to see that it is firm and does not rattle. Listen for the sound of air getting into the car, noises from outside the car would appear louder. Driving Tips for Success

Driving Tips For Success 1. Doing a bit of homework for yourself can really help. Your instructor may set you some tasks to do, things to reflect on or read up on. Try searching YouTube to get some information about the driving syllabus and what to expect on the day of the test. Many people have made blogs on their own experiences that may come in handy. Also the DVSA have published their own set of videos to support you.  Some of the videos may relate to the lesson you have just had or the lesson planned for next week that you will be doing, i.e. roundabouts and dual carriageways are a really good place to start.  2. Get involved, at the end of each of your lessons, it is advisable to have a look back on the lesson and have a chat with your instructor on what you need to work on to improve and better your progress. You could compile a summary of the lesson to self reflect. What went well? What Didn't go so well? And what do I want to improve on as a personal target for next lesson

What will happen on the day of my driving test?

On the day of your driving test you will be picked up roughly an hour before your test. Treat it like a warm up where you have the opportunity to get rid your nerves and ask any questions that might be bothering you. You will drive to the test centre 10 minuted before the test and reverse bay park your vehicle into an designated parking bay. Make sure that the vehicle is set up exactly to your requirements - seat position, steering wheel, mirrors etc. When you enter the building its advised to use the toilet so that you feel comfortable during your test. You will wait in the waiting area with your instructor until the examiner calls your name. Have your driving license ready and the key for the car. When you are called out you will be required to present your license and confirm your address. Then you will be asked to sign the declaration on the test paper. Your examiner will ask if you wish to have your instructor to sit in the back with you during the test, sometimes this helps calm

How can I overcome nerves when it comes to my driving test?

Unfortunately nerves play a big part in how people feel when they take their test and can impact on a persons performance - it is important to feel confident in your ability and not to take your test until you are ready. When your instructor says that they feel you are ready, believe in their opinion and believe in yourself. They would not let you take your test if they did not believe that you were ready. Its important to go out near the test and calm your nerves. Try techniques to calm your nerves around the days before the test. Have a good meal, make sure you are hydrated, had a good night sleep, feel alert and focused. If the examiner is not very chatty - talk to yourself to avoid your mind wondering off in a pattern of worry. You could become an instructor inside your head - look back to your first lesson - think of the amount of information you were given to perform tasks - use this information to guide you so that you cover all the areas required to pass your test. To summarise

Music in your Driving Test

Music can help calm nerves, create moods, reduce anxiety and fill the gaps of empty silence. Having music on in the background, quietly, non offensive, can be requested in your test. Why not see if it works for you.

Preparing yourself the night before your driving test.

Prepare yourself the night before, find a way to switch off, Calm the nerves and get a good night sleep. On the day of the test be energised, alert and focussed, certain foods, drinks and vitamins can help with alertness and nerves - do your research and it could help you on the day. Avoid wondering off in a day dream where your mind takes over, focus, stay positive and most important of all - don't give up. You need to wait to the end of the test for the result, be patient.

Awareness and planning

Awareness and planning The behaviour of other drivers could jeopardise your test. You need to be aware of what everybody around you is doing. Your rear view mirror will help determin if a driver is coming up fast from behind, driving to close or atempting to overtake. Avoid getting caught out with drivers undertaking you, keep to the left if the road is clear on the dual carriageway. Look ahead and into roundabouts, what are the cars doing and how are they driving? Is there lack of indication, are they driving fast, where are the positioned, how will they affect you? At the end of the day you want a pass - awareness and planning is a key part in driving success. Be the driver you want to be.

Not signaling

There are too many people who don't signal, pull out without warning, don't signal off of roundabouts or tell you what direction you are heading. It causes confusion and delay and in some cases can jeopardise a learners test. To overcome this hurdal you need to observe other drivers behaviour and avoid risk and confrontation. How are the other cars positioned, what speed are they traveling, what is the likelyhood of them carying on or turning. Judgement is important and how you anticipate can determin the balance between hesitation and risk.

First Impressions

First Impressions. “When you arrive at the test centre for your Driving Test, first impressions are so important, it's almost like going for an interview. Think about what you want the examiner to make of you when they call you over. They should not judge you in anyway really, but how would you feel if someone approached you who you didn't know anything about? Avoid having your hoodie up, avoid confrontation, you are not expected to shake hands, be your self, be polite, be honest. You are not there to be their friend, you will only be with them for 40 minutes. You are there to prove that you have learnt to be a safe driver and that you are competent enough to carry this out without their help. Think about how you should turn up to the test. ' At the end of the day - You want to pass!' So first impressions on the day of your driving test really do count – how you present yourself in front of the examiner is important, be professional, courteous, polite and most of all be

How Many Hours Of Driving Tuition Will I Need?

How Many Hours Of Driving Tuition Will I Need? This is always a hard question as it depends on how quickly you progress. On average you will need between 30-45 hours of tuition before you are test standard. Some people need longer and have to accept it will take them longer to get to where they need to be. Others may find it easier and may need less hours. Sometimes they progress quicker because of other similar experiences such as riding a moped. The key is commitment, effort, focus and becoming independent, taking a responsibility for decisions made and actions taken. When Should I Start Learning To Drive?

When should you start learning to drive? You can start learning to drive when you reach 17 years of age in the UK. Be open minded, accept criticism, see it as constructive and develop a new skill that can be very rewarding. We are here to help you every step of the way whatever age you may be.
